Interview with the Ember
Behind every cursed object and slow-burn kiss is a writer with ink-stained fingers and a slightly suspicious browser history. These ten questions peel back the veil to reveal the obsessions, inspirations, and delightful chaos that fuel each member of the Obsidian Flame Society.
- What draws you to write stories with magic, monsters, or mayhem?
Because I’ve never believed the world is as mundane as it pretends to be. Magic is just truth with better lighting, and monsters are usually more honest than men. I write to peel back the veil and remind us that wonder, terror, and transformation are always just one choice—or curse—away.
- Which of your characters would you trust to protect you in a supernatural showdown—and which one would absolutely sell you out?
Eiranthiel would burn the world to keep me breathing, though he’d be grumpy about it the entire time. Rhys Marrow would probably save me… but not before extracting a kiss, a promise, or a soul-tax I can’t afford.
- What’s a recurring theme or symbol that keeps showing up in your work—whether you mean for it to or not?
Found family, claiming your own power, and embracing the sharp, strange parts of yourself that the world told you to hide. My stories almost always circle back to identity—not just discovering who you are, but having the courage to become it, fully and unapologetically. Symbols like blood, bones, mirrors, and the sea show up again and again… sometimes all at once, reflecting that journey of transformation.
- Do you plot everything out like a prophecy—or write by the seat of your broomstick?
I divine just enough to set the wards and then follow the shadows where they lead. It’s a little bit prophecy, a little bit possession.
- If your writing were a potion, what would its ingredients be?
One drop lunar ink, a pinch of graveyard moss, three tears you don’t remember crying, and a matchbook from a place that doesn’t exist anymore. Stir counterclockwise until haunted.
- Which fictional world would you pack your bags and move to—no questions asked?
Prythian (ACOTAR) has the magic, the danger, and just enough drama to keep things interesting—but I’d also happily disappear into the wilds of The Witcher, or go live my best cursed scholar life in The Ninth House. And listen, I’d take Daenerys’s dragons… but only if Khal Drogo comes with the deal. Otherwise, I’ll be setting up a haunted bookshop somewhere in Middle-earth, preferably near a mountain with fire-breathing neighbors.
- Are you more of a haunted mansion, enchanted forest, or cursed seaside town kind of writer?
Cursed seaside town, every time—but it had better come with an enchanted forest at its back and a haunted mansion on the cliff’s edge. Bonus points for mist, shipwrecks, and prophetic birds.
- What’s one thing readers would be surprised to learn about you?
I have a master’s degree in psychology, with a focus on consciousness and the mind-body-universe connection. I can still give a dead-serious lecture on the topic before slipping into a witch circle and hexing your landlord. That’s what I call balance.
- If you had to be cursed with one supernatural trait forever, what would you choose?
I’ll take second sight—visions, omens, prophetic dreams. Sure, it ruins brunch plans, but it keeps things interesting.
- Tea, coffee, or the blood of your enemies? (Okay… or something else entirely?)
Coffee. Black. Occasionally stirred with a cinnamon stick or a bone-handled dagger, depending on the mood.
